Sykotik Masquerade Club of Calgary is a non-profit ethno cultural volunteer organization that exists solely to aid Caribbean arts and art forms while preserving a significant part of Caribbean cultural heritage in Alberta.  As an artistic group we are very active in designing Caribbean-style costumes primarily for presentation in many cultural events in Alberta.  More importantly we teach and develop new artists and other volunteers who are not otherwise familiar with the art form and educate them on building and sewing techniques, and artistic trade secret. The creative process involves a large team of volunteers from many different industries including, but not limited to, welders, seamstresses, wire benders, designers, artists and application specialists (detailers) and cultural backgrounds.  Additional, we promote and support Caribbean music, dance and theatre.

In support of the Caribbean Community in Alberta we participate in the Caribbean Festivals,Carifest in Calgary (www.carifestcalgary.com ) and Cariwest in Edmonton (www.cariwestfestival.com). We are always looking for opportunities to present our work by participating in other cultural events and export the various art forms, through dance, music, food and costumes. Sykotik Mas hosts a cultural pavilion at Globalfest,( www.globalfest.ca ) Calgary’s Multicultural and International Fireworks Festival and DiverCity.

One of our award winning costumes has been featured in Globalfest advertorials placed in BC, the Alberta issues of Westworld Magazine and was featured on the Alberta Train for the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Sykotik Mas is committed to and proud of its community involvement. We donate costumes to schools and other groups that are in need. Additionally we provide Caribbean style costumes for a number of different Caribbean theatrical groups. We assist in the promotion and preservation of the unique dance styles that are specific to the Caribbean.

Soca music ( a vibrant musical art form, Reggae’s young brother) is a significant part of what we do. For those who play “mas”, the Sykotik team is focused on delivering “The Ultimate Carnival Experience” for masqueraders and parade watchers alike, by creating striking designs in rich and vibrant colors. We develop themes aimed at a varied audience and want to increase awareness of the unique art of costume design and construction.

Help us make cancer history!

Sykotik Mas is participating in a Reach for a Cure fundraising event to support the mission of the Canadian Cancer Society. The money raised from this event helps fund leading-edge cancer research that is improving cancer treatments, preventing cancer and saving lives.

Sykotik Mas Club of Calgary is a non-profit organization that creates Caribbean-style costumes which are presented in Caribbean Festivals/Parades throughout Alberta. In an effort to honor the memory of one of its founding members, Sykotik Mas would like to make a tribute of its 2010 costume presentation to Doris Piper, who lost her battle with cancer in 2009.

Please join us for the Carifest Parade on 8th Ave in Calgary on June 12, 2010 as we dance in the streets in celebration of a future without cancer. We invite survivors of cancer, those living with, or have lost loved ones to cancer and anyone else who would like to support the cause. This is a family friendly event for men, women and children of all ages and is sure to give you a sense of Carnival in the Caribbean.
